A Glycolic Face Peel? - The Pros And Cons And Looking At A Safer Alternative
I do not wish to be alarmist but I was shocked when I read the comments from the Chairman of the Cancer Prevention Coalition . He did not mince his words when he warned that a glycolic face peel which contains the alpha hydroxy acids was probably one of the most dangerous cosmetic products on the market!
Skin care experts are alarmed because the stripping away of the upper layer of skin is depriving the epidermis of its protective layer. It might have a few spots and wrinkles but it is there for a very specific purpose. They warn that this could, in some cases, lead to cancer.
Let us have a look at exactly at what is going on here because a glycolic face peel is enormously popular and it is widely used and abused. The mildest one contains the alpha hydroxy acids which are basically derived from fruit acids, especially citrus fruit ones.
They strip away the old top layer of skin which causes a knee jerk reaction in skin cell renewal and more collagen is produced to repair the damage. The damage will be there initially for all to see in that there will be redness and some irritation and you certainly cannot go out in the sun. When the skin repairs itself, of course you have smoother better toned skin but the underlying problems of skin sagging and deeper wrinkles are certainly not solved.
So, is a glycolic face peel worth all this effort and risk? The answer, in my opinion is definitely not as there are safer alternatives which can do a better job and carry no health risks at all. Now that we have looked at the pros and cons, let us seek out an alternative.
I am thinking here of a safer alternative such as a deep cleansing mask which can lift off old dead skin cells, dirt and grime. It leaves the skin cells intact and there is no trauma involved. It is even better when we use a product which contains no harmful chemicals at all.
There are also other ingredients which can be used as natural moisturizers and others to boost collagen and elastin. Then there is a natural ingredient derived from an algae which can keep the nasty hyaluronidase enzyme at bay.
Why force your skin to endure a traumatic burn even with a light glycolic face peel when you can do so much more for real skin cell renewal with perfectly natural ingredients? For me, this is a no brainer!
