Is there a species of ray small enough to be kept in a home aquarium?
There are many species of rays throughout the world, but I'm not sure if there is one that could be humanely kept in a home aquarium. I do not have a tank yet, but will eventually. I'm asking now so that when/if I'm able to, I can get the proper size tank.
There are smaller varieties in both fresh and saltwater tanks that could be housed in a 180 or 200 gallon tank or larger. The smallest ones are about 12 inches in diameter plus tail. They need a tank with a large footprint. So the teacup for freshwater is a smaller variety at about 12-14 inches in diameter. THe saltwater blue spot stingray gets about 12 inches in diameter.
Some places have a ban on freshwater sting rays, and only the saltwater variety is allowed.
So if your home aquarium is 150-180 gallon or above with a large footprint (no tall/narrow tanks btu short wide tanks), you can keep one in a home aquarium. There are none that would do well in a more average tank, like a 55 gallon.
If you wanted the look but not that large of a tank, the hillstream loaches are nice and have the disc shape. They just need a high flow river setup, but can do well in a medium size tank. http://www.loaches.com/articles/hillstream-loaches-the-specialists-at-life-in-the-fast-lane
