The Rules of Pet Adoption

Adopting a pet can be a very socially responsible, fulfilling way to add to your family. Shelters are filled beyond capacity with dogs, cats and other small animals that patiently await their forever homes. But, while doing this can be a supreme act of love, there are some rules and guidelines that you should be aware of before visiting the first shelter. Those rules are:

Before the visit:

1. Make sure that everyone is in agreement about the kind of pet that you are looking for. This should include the breed, size and sex of the pet. Discuss this thoroughly with your children and make sure that they understand that any sign of dissent will equal an end to the trip immediately.

2. Make sure that everyone in the family is aware of proper animal safety rules. Do they know how to approach an animal correctly? Is there any chance at all that anyone will be frightened? A frightened child might equal a frightened pet-which could mean trouble.

3. Finally, make sure that everyone knows what to expect- that there will be a lot of animals, and that while it is sad that they are there, you can only take one. Also, find out the shelter's policies on the actual adoption- will you fill out forms and wait for approval, or will you be able to take your pet home that night?

While at the shelter:

1. Remind children of the rules and make sure that they are within arm's reach of you at all times.

2. Walk through and do a quick scan, narrowing the family's selections down to a few and then returning for a closer inspection.

3. Ask questions of the shelter staff, including known health history, behavior, and any other key facts that they might have.

4. Visit with the selected pet if that is allowed, watching the interaction between him and the family members.

After the visit:

1. Come home to allow everyone to discuss his or her feelings about the pet in question. Did they like him, or did they think that there might be a better pet out there somewhere?

2. Call the shelter staff and update them on your family's decision. If you have decided to adopt, fill out necessary forms if you have not already, and pay any fees. If you have decided against adoption, then tell the shelter staff any reasons that you might have- so that they can keep your input in mind when showing the pet to the next family.

Adopting a pet should be rewarding, and it will be as long as everyone knows what to expect from the very start.

Two Rivers Campground

Three days at a campground may not be time enough to answer all your questions, but it is long to enough to answer the question I would ask if limited to just one.  "Would you stay there again?"  The answer to that question is an unqualified, "Yes."

Two Rivers campground is located at 2616 Music Valley Drive in Nashville.  For those not familiar with Nashville it is two miles from the Grand Ole Opry, Gaylord Opryland Hotel, and Opry Mills.  It is next door to Camping World and well within walking distance of The Cock of the Walk.  You will want to take the walk to The Cock of the Walk if you love catfish or even just wondered what those Southerners were talking about.

If you don't tow a vehicle a quick call from Two Rivers and for a mere $4 you can ride to all of the aforementioned attractions with the word Opry in them.  You can go from place to place and back again all the live long day.  We were pleasantly shocked to be picked up in a black Lincoln Town Car.  Two Rivers will also arrange for tours or a bus ride downtown.  Along Music Valley Drive you will also find a number of restaurants including; Bob Evans, Cracker Barrel, and Santa Fe Cattle Company.

Two Rivers' offers several discounts and we paid under $32 a night for a full hookup.  You can expect to pay from around $32 to $42 per night depending upon the kind of hookup and whether 30 or 50 AMP.  They also provide free wifi, a godsend for many of us.  There's free coffee in the office if you need a quick pick me up.  If that's not enough free stuff for you they also have free entertainment several times a week.  This is Nashville and of course it will be country music.

By my count Two Rivers has 88 sites with varying levels of service.  Each site comes with a concrete patio, tables and chairs.  There is also a light at every hookup junction.  The sites are rock and level.  While my overall feeling is that the sites are a bit tight, we saw more really big RVs here than almost anyplace I can remember.

For those of us in less than ritzy RVs they have five showers for males and an equal number for the fairer sex.  The showers are clean and the water is hot, but they are small, very, very small.  If you are carrying more than a few extra pounds it will be a tight squeeze.  There is also a laundry and it costs a dollar per load.

Two Rivers has a reasonably good selection of souvenirs, and miscellaneous supplies as well as a pool.

If you do nothing but walk through the Gaylord Opryland Hotel, check out Opry Mills and of course attend the Grand Old Opry, it will be worth the trip.  However, take a few minutes to discover the many things there are to do in Nashville from professional and college football to the NHL to the plethora of music related events and museums.

Two Rivers Campground, (615-883-8559) rates a return visit by yours truly.
