Natural Treatments to Prevent Cracked Lips

Why do our lips become chapped? The main reason that our lips become chapped is due to moisture loss. The lips are a very sensitive, thin layer of skin that is susceptible to the damages from the outside environment. The lips have a very thin layer of natural oil that protects it from injury. However, this layer of protection is easily removed, damaged or lacking which causes infection, cracking, bleeding or swelling. Chapped lips are very unappealing but can also be painful and tender if swollen or bleeding. The best way to reduce chapped lips is to restore moisture to the lips as quickly as possible. Keeping lip balms, and lip moisturizers on hand are ideal to eliminate chapped or dry lips. Here are some natural ways to keep your lips moist and beautiful!

1.     Oil based lip balms and lip creams are best to restore and hold moisture into the lips. Next time you buy Chap Stick make sure it has an oil base.

2.     Cocoa butter, shea butter and ghee are all three natural butters that moisten the lips and revive them back to life. The skin easily absorbs these oils to rejuvenate dried cells.

3.     Honey is a natural humectant, which allows the lips and skin to maintain moisture. It is a great antioxidant and will keep the lips from drying out.

3.     Petroleum or beeswax lip balm can be applied to the lips to create a protectant layer that keeps moisture in and dryness out.

4.     Use sunscreen. Excessive sun will remove the moisture from skin and lips. Wearing a lip balm or lipstick with sunscreen will reduce the moisture that is lost from the lips.

5.     Mix cream of milk with a few drops of rose water and limejuice. This will exfoliate dead skin cells and moisturize the dryness of chapped lips.

6.     Mix vegetable glycerin with vitamin E to nourish the lips and create a barrier against the environment.

7.     Papaya is a natural exfoliant. Mash a ripe papaya into a paste and apply to the lips for 15 minutes. Rinse off the lips and apply a moisturizer.

8.     Use a humidifier in your house. This keeps cold and dry air away during the winter months. It keeps the air moist, which will keep lips from drying out and becoming chapped.

9.     Keep your body hydrated. By constantly replenishing the body with water and fluids, you can keep from becoming dehydrated, especially your lips.

10.  Avoid irritants and allergens, which can cause an allergic reaction. Fragrances and dyes are normal causes of such irritation.

11.  Nutritional deficiencies can be the cause of persistent chapped lips. A lack of vitamin B and iron can the cause. Take a multivitamin to maintain  proper levels of essential nutrients in the body.

12.  If you drool at night, it can cause your lips to dry out and become chapped. Apply zinc oxide ointment on the lips before you go to bed at night. This will protect the lips from drying out while you sleep.

13.  If you get stranded without any treatment for your chapped lips, rub your finger along the side of your face. It will pick up natural oils that your skin produces to protect the skin. You can apply this directly onto the lips to restore and protect your lips until you can use one of the other natural treatments. The skin produces more natural oil than the lips and will replace the oil overtime throughout the day.

Chronic Chapped Lips

Chapped lips are the result of our lips being too dry. Chronic chapped lips can result from nutritional deficiencies and dehydration, or over exposure to sun or cold and windy conditions. The explanation for severe and chronic dry lips is that our skin has lost its moisture retention capacity. As a consequence, our lips become easily chapped. The chapping further reduces the moisture retention capacity and this vicious circle results in the problem becoming chronic and increasingly severe. During the winter, people are most affected by chapped lips when wind, cold weather and dry air take toll. The chapped may reduce the capacity of moisture retention and give results too dry, chronic and severe pain. Take a small amount of petroleum jelly and massage it on the dry lips. It is very effective to get soft skin of lips. After this, use a damp or warm facecloth for rubbing the lips gently.

Severe chapped lips are not only painful but they make you look ugly. Use over the counter antibiotic ointments in case of having severe chapped lips as it can become infected and cause serious condition. Eating too much of anything, even if it is healthy can never be a good thing. Eating too many figs can also cause your allergic reaction due to photo-toxicity. Various other lip care products are worth noting when it comes to narrowing in on allergic reactions. Many contain Phenylsalicylate or salol, which is commonly the cause. Orange juice as well as any other citrus juice can irritate your lips. Citrus can cause photo-toxic reaction that appears to be chapped lips. Cinnamon flavoring can cause lip chapping and it is found in candy, gum, mouthwashes, etc. One should drink large quantity of water like 10-12 glasses of water in a day to prevent dehydration.

Chapped lips is the drying and flaking of dehydrated lips and is common in people with other skin conditions like eczema. Certain medications, like those used to treat acne and allergies to cosmetics and skin-care products, can also contribute to dry and irritated lips.Eat foods high in calcium, magnesium and flaxseed oil Calcium rich foods include milk, yogurt, cheese, beans, and salmon. Almonds and tofu are very high as well. Combine calcium intake with magnesium (seek out legumes, nuts, whole grains and vegetables) and flax seed oil. These three ingredients are proven to aid in the healing of lip surfaces. Treat chaffed, chapped and scaling lips overnight with a homemade ointment mixed from 1 tsp glycerine, 1 tsp lemon juice and 1 tsp castor oil. Spread on lips overnight, refrigerating the leftovers for future use.

Vitamin inadequacy is an unexpected perpetrator in constantly chapped lips. Certain nutritional deficiencies induce inadequate cellular hydration. When lips get chapped it is really popular for folk to lick their lips in an effort to drizzle them. Although saliva soothes momentarily, the act perpetuates the rhythm of arid and annoyed lips. Avoid licking your lips. Saliva evaporates rapidly and digests the slim membrane protecting lips, leaving lips drier than before you licked them. Because sunlight vulnerability can dry and blow the rind, take a lip ointment or salve containing sunscreen to defend the lips from detrimental rays. Medical care should be sought if symptoms continue without advance. Your doctor may select to dictate antibiotics or may regard prescription handling for dermatitis
