Well, it is the same tree that we are talking about, the juniper bonsai tree! Evergreen bonsai trees from Japan are hugely popular in the United States. Many of the trees are cultured as bonsai but for a layman, juniper tree is a starter. Where do juniper trees grow? These trees are widely distributed throughout the northern Hemisphere. There are at least 50 juniper tree species present today, all with their own specialties. Juniper trees are evergreen, long lived, they can adapt to any soil type. They are dioecious (having separate male and female plants) as well. Juniper is a multipurpose tree, which is why prehistoric people lived near juniper forest, which became a prime source for their food and shelter. The juniper berries are used for making spices, medicines, as well as liquor products like gin. One can also make a hedge with the juniper trees, they create great outdoor ambiance. Junipers prefer plenty of sunlight, so those of you who live in a snowy region must opt for the indoor juniper trees. The juniper bonsai is a symbol of fertility, strength and athleticism and they are a very popular plant for indoor gardening.
Juniper trees are wonderful and very versatile garden plants, beautiful to look at during any season of the year. Tolerating a wide range of growing and soil conditions and a certain degree of drought, juniper trees add permanence to the garden landscape as they maintain their foliage throughout summer and winter. Foliage colours within the same plant vary a little too, depending upon season.
The wide range of shapes and foliage textures of juniper trees provides great variety and possibilities for visually exciting effects when designing the garden scene. Junipers available to the home gardener range from prostrate or ground-hugging carpets of neat, dense foliage to upright, tree forms that provide shelter and background design.
Foliage Colours
Juniper trees also come in a wide range of foliage colours, from silvery-grey or grey-blue, through mauve and purple in the wintertime, to apple-greens and dark greens, cream-tipped, bronze and yellow-gold. They contrast with and enhance each other, as well as a wide range of other garden plants.
Easy to Grow
In general green mound juniper trees should be grown in free-draining soil, and do well in poor or impoverished soils. They do not like boggy or water-logged soils. Junipers will grow in alkaline or acidic soils. Their native habitats are often rocky or mountainous in nature, and they look particularly good in such settings in a garden, especially when planted with other plants from these areas, for example heathers, low-growing shrubs and alpines. However, juniper trees also look good in a contemporary garden with grey-leaved plants, for example, and are effective against steel planters, gravel mulch and paving. They do not look so good when competing for space with herbaceous plants or other plants that will lie against their foliage and make it go brown.

Bbq Rib Of Beef With Juniper Cream Sauce
Juniper berries add an irresistible accent to this classic roast. Find them in your grocer's spice rack or in speciality gourmet shops.
For the prime rib:
2 tablespoons freshly ground coffee beans
1 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
1 beef rib roast, 7 to 8 pounds
Olive oil for brushing roast
For the cream sauce:
3 tablespoons butter
1 cup sliced fresh mushrooms
3 tablespoons finely chopped shallots
1 quart beef gravy or brown sauce
2 cups dry white wine
10 to 20 juniper berries, tied in a cheesecloth sachet
Salt and pepper
1/2 cup heavy whipping cream
3 tablespoons red currant jelly
2 tablespoons gin
To prepare the prime rib: In a small bowl combine ground coffee, salt, and pepper. Rub mixture on beef roast, pressing into the surface. Brush lightly with oil.
Place roast in centre of cooking grate. Grill 2-1/4 to 2-3/4 hours for rare (140°F/60°C), 2-1/2 to 3 hours for medium (160° F/71° C). Remove from grill and let roast rest 10 minutes before carving. Make cream sauce in last half-hour of roast cooking time.
To make the cream sauce: In a medium saucepan melt butter. Add mushrooms and shallots; cook over medium heat 5 minutes or until tender. Add gravy, wine, and juniper berry sachet. Simmer over medium heat until liquid is reduced by half. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
Meanwhile, in a small mixing bowl, with mixer at medium speed, beat heavy cream until stiff peaks form.
Strain reduced sauce; return to saucepan. Stir in red currant jelly and cook over low heat until jelly is dissolved. Stir in gin. Remove from heat. Gently fold in whipped cream. Add salt and pepper to taste.
To serve, place a little cream sauce on a plate; top with a slice of beef roast.
Makes about 12 servings.
BBQ Beef Safety Tips:
You should always fully defrost beef before cooking to prevent the exterior becoming overdone before the inside of the meat is cooked. It is best to thaw frozen beef in the refrigerator.
You may also defrost in the microwave oven or in cold water. If you are using the microwave, cook the ground beef immediately because some areas may begin to cook during the defrosting.
To defrost in cold water, put the meat in a watertight plastic bag and submerge.
