Types of Body Massage

Massage therapy involves the manipulation of soft body tissues with pressure, tension, motion or vibration. In addition to various parts of the body, massage can be performed with the aid of mechanical aids, oils and lotions. It is one of the oldest and simplest forms of promoting good health. There are over eighty different types of massage. Let us review some of the more common types of body massage.

Swedish Massage

During a gentle and relaxing Swedish massage, the therapist applies massage oil to the body and uses kneading, circular movements in combination with long, smooth strokes. There are six basic strokes: effleurage, petrissage, friction, tapotement, compression and vibration. Superficial layers of muscle are targeted.

Sports Massage

Athletes and people who work out regularly can benefit from a sports massage. The aim is to loosen muscles and increase flexibility so that athletic performance is enhanced and injuries are prevented or avoided. Therapists use facilitated stretching techniques in combination with more rapid strokes compared with a Swedish massage.

Aromatherapy Massage

Aromatherapy massage therapy is performed with the aid of essential oils. Essential oils are scented plant oils and each essential oil is thought to have different effects on the body. For example, rosemary oil is cleansing and energising, chamomile, lavender and geranium are calming and rose, neroli and ylang ylang are uplifting. The theory is that essential oils are both inhaled and absorbed through the skin and have effects on blood pressure, breathing, memory, digestion and stress levels. For this reason, aromatherapy massages are particularly useful for treating emotional problems and stress-related conditions.

Hot Stone Massage

During a hot stone massage, heated smooth stones made of basalt are placed on certain points on the body, including the back, the palms of the hands or in between the toes. The therapist may also apply pressure to the stones. The aim is to warm and thereby loosen tight muscles and also to improve the circulation. This lighter form of massage is particularly suited to people suffering from muscle tension.

Shiatsu

Shiatsu is a form of Japanese massage which involves the use of rhythmic finger and palm pressure to acupuncture meridians. The aim is to improve the flow of energy around the body and thereby restore the body to a balanced state. Benefits include improved circulation, reduced muscular stiffness and reduced stress levels.

Touch has been shown to bring numerous health benefits to people with a variety of conditions ranging from a variety of chronic disorders, injuries and stress-related conditions. It may be worth taking some time to find the type of body massage that is best suited to your needs, if only to help you relax at the end of a long day.

Massage 101 - A Quick Guide to Various Types of Massage

Massage therapy has become an important part of general health care for many people living in today's stressful environment. With the increasing demand for such therapy, the massage centre has been mushrooming uncontrollably up like Starbucks outlets in most of cities, especially Asian countries. Below is a quick guide to the most popular types of massage therapy commonly found.

Traditional Thai Massage
Traditional Thai massage uses deep tissue, pressure point and stretching techniques. Therefore, it's more energizing and rigorous than other classic forms of massage. Thai massage also called Thai yoga massage. The masseuse usually uses more parts of body like feet, elbows, and palms to massage.

Reflexology & foot massage
Reflexology is actually not foot massage. For foot massage the therapist typically uses massage oil or lotion and use gentle gliding strokes all over the foot. Whereas the genuine reflexology is based on the theory that certain points on the feet correspond to certain body parts. Therefore, applying pressure to the areas can promote health in the corresponding parts. Reflexology massage uses hands and fingers.

Swedish massage
This is the most common massage available. The therapist uses massage oils to facilitate smooth, gliding strokes. Other moves involve are kneading, friction, stretching, tapping and vibrating. The hand pressure can range from gentle to promote relaxation to firm but not as firm as in deep tissue massage.

Aromatherapy Massage
It's fundamentally using Swedish massage technique with the added benefit of concentrated plant oils, called essential oils, to the original massage oil and lotion. Each essential oil has different healing properties such as calming, uplifting, energizing, cleansing, and de-congesting.

Hot Stone Massage
Heated smooth and flat stones are placed at specific points on the back, in the palms or between toes. The massage therapist may also hold the stones and use them to massage certain parts of the body. The heated stones will warm and relax the muscles, which allows the therapist to apply deeper pressure later on.

Tui Na Massage
Tui Na uses rhythmic compression along energy channels of the body, as well as a variety of techniques that manipulate and lubricate the joints. Tui Na also directly affects the flow of energy by holding and pressing the body at acupressure points. The intent of Tui Na is more specifically therapeutic than the simple relaxation of a Swedish-style massage.

Traditional Malay Massage
The local traditional urut ( massage in Malay ) combines slow rhythmic gliding strokes, stretching, stepping, long kneading, deep tissue and pressure applied to every part of the body, from the head, face, abdomen, body to feet and toes. It's efficient in calming the nerves and improving overall welbeing.

Fish spa
Fish spa is listed at the last because some might not consider it as a type of massage. Anyway, this therapy is getting popular in Asian countries. Your legs are put into a water tank full of highly-priced Garra Rufa fishes from Turkey. The doctor fishes will nibble away your scaly and dead skin, leaving your skin smooth and glowin

The above mentioned massage therapies are some of the common types. This is by no means an exhaustive list. If you want to get more information related to massage therapy,www.massagemalaysia.com, a reflexology and massage Malaysia blog, is a place to go.
