And one important thing to consider in the arrival of the baby is the kind of baby bedding he or she will use. Many of the problems involved in fitting a bath are the same as those involved in fitting a sink or basin. The problems of access are often worse, so fitting tails to the taps and carefully working out the exact position of the various parts of the waste system is often more important. Before starting to work, turn off the water to the taps and drain the system as necessary.
When replacing an old cast-iron bath, it is usually easier to break it up on the spot rather than trying to remove it in one piece. Cover the surface with sacking, old blankets or quilts and protect any nearby ceramic ware. Wear goggles, thick gloves, ear plugs and protective clothing, and smash the bath into pieces with a sledge-hammer. Wear protective clothing when you remove the pieces, too. If the bath is being broken up in situ, it may not be necessary to disconnect water and waste pipes first - otherwise deal with these in the same way as for removing an old sink.
If you want to remove a cast-iron bath in one piece, disconnect the pipes first. Lowering the bath on its adjustable feet may help to release it from the wall, but many old baths will have fixed feet. Strong helpers will be needed to get the bath out of the bathroom.
As with sinks, do as much plumbing work as possible. Fit at least the taps to the bath before fitting the bath in position. It will be easier to fit the waste outlet at this stage too. A bath waste outlet comes complete with the trap and overflow pipe. Taps and wastes are usually scaled with washers rather than mastic.
Fitting the bath itself can be more difficult than fitting a basin. Steel baths usually have brackets fitted to the bottom - these have adjustable feet to ensure that the bath can be positioned so that the bot¬tom of the bath slopes slightly in the direction of the waste outlet. Plastic baths need a proper supporting cradle to ensure that they do not creak or sag in use. Make sure you get the correct cradle for the bath and the instructions on how to install it.
With any sort of bath, it is sensible to put boards beneath the levelling feet to spread the load over the floorboards.
Once the bath is properly fixed in place, connect the pipes to the taps (or tap tails if these are being used) and the waste pipe to the outlet of the trap (if this has already been fitted). It is usually best to start by connecting the tap furthest away (you may need to temporarily disconnect the overflow pipe); then deal with the waste and over¬flow; then connect the other tap.
