Ashiatsu Massage Training - Keep It Simple!
When I see people doing Ashiatsu massage on internet videos, I often see them trying to all kinds of funky techniques that are not supposed to be done with the feet! I laugh because I know they all learned how to do barefoot from the same Ashiatsu massage training school! lol.
Maybe it's just because I am a man and have been using "tools" all my life. I know when it is appropriate to use a hammer and when it is better to use a screwdriver! By the same token I don't try to do circular strokes on the scapulas with my feet! lol! The forearms are perfect for this job. Now don't get me wrong about the value of the feet. They are way freaking good for the back, hamstrings, calves, the back of the arms and sometimes the quads....if the person is big and tight enough to warrant using the feet. Once in a while I even get somebody that has just huge arms that need the power of Ashiatsu barefoot massage.
I'm Brett Rodgers, massage therapist. If you like my articles please see my web site too! I make the worlds best custom orthotics for the feet, cool and natural sitting cushions and awesome millet hull pillows!
Let me tell you, I am going to laugh so hard when I see massage therapists using their toes to work on people's ears! Ha! Ha! Ha!
Maybe it's because I learned how to use the feet all on my own and because I have a lot of common sense. The feet will never be able to do the technical massage strokes that the hands can do. Part of being a great massage therapist is knowing when and where to use the different tools. No, it doesn't surprise me that people are being taught to do all kinds of techniques with the feet that have no business being done with the feet. (When you are trying to fill a 25 hour class with information, you scrounge for stuff to fill it with! You've got to give people their monies worth right?) Wrong! Ashiatsu massage therapists need to keep it simple and not be stupid! I can just hear what their clients say after the massage... "She tried to use her feet on my whole body, even my stomach. I liked the feet on my back and on my legs but I wish she had at least used her hands on my arms. I won't go back to her again."
You can also use the feet to stretch facia if you put bolsters in the right places under the body. Yes, you can do structural integration with the feet and you will crack a lot of backs too. (No, the Rolfers and the chiropractors do not have patents on everything! lololo!)
Questions and Answers:
No, Ashiatsu massage is not as good with the therapist sitting on a chair. You cannot get near the pressure and you don't have near the control as when you have solid bars built into the ceiling. It is fun to experiment though so have at it.
Yes, you can use crutches or a walker to do Ashiatsu on the floor but that is not as good as having solid bars and doing Ashiatsu on a table but it is a great way to be able to do Ashiatsu mobile though... on the beach, at the park, ect. Using crutches takes practice but it can be done. I got pretty good at it for a while.
Yes, bars can be made from 1 1/4 inch closet rod material found at the hardware store. Get uncle Joe to mount them to your ceiling and then paint them with a natural and safe coating. I used a cashew tree resin varnish that I bought at the healthy building materials store.
Yes, you may need an electric table if your ceiling is a standard 8' in height and you are tall like me . I have an Earthlite Ellora. I highly recommend it and Massage king is the best place to buy it. (Adding an electric lift table to your practice is a huge benefit for your body mechanics and massage abilities. Every good mechanic has the ability to lift their work up and down to be able to get the right angle and leverage on it.)
So, in conclusion, I would like to say, if you're going to add Ashiatsu barefoot massage to your repertoire of massage abilities, don't over-do it! Use the feet to do simple, big strokes on large muscle groups and practice, practice practice as that makes perfect!

Benefits Of Massage Therapy
Massage therapy offers a wide array of benefits. Now doctors, therapists and scientists have identified many more benefits than what were traditionally regarded as the advantages of massage therapy. As they continue to study and analyze the positive aspects of massage therapy, it surprises mankind that a simple massage could have such tremendous effects on the human health. Massage therapy dates back to old times when it was considered one of the most effective means of healing. Even though it is based on the simple power of human touch yet it has effective healing effects. There are varying forms and manifestations of massage, which offer its own individual benefits to the patients. A massage session can be conducted while someone is standing, sitting in a chair or what is most commonly seen is that when the patient is lying on a flat structure, which could even be a bed etc. With the development in the field of massage therapy, it has lead to the introduction of many products etc that facilitate the entire experience of having a massage; these products allow the individuals to watch over the massage techniques by themselves. Thus making the process even more beneficial and conducive to the patients.
The simplest and most common benefit of a massage known to a common man’s knowledge is that it is a stress relieving mechanism whereby an individual can relax. Any individual experiencing tension, stress, anxiety or emotional or any other pressures can avail the relaxation relief that is offered by a massage. The additional use of creams, lotions and oils further enhances the process of a massage leading to a better experience for the patient. These products facilitate the massage experience by not allowing the therapist to move his hands freely across the patient’s body rather the products have medicinal attributes which get absorbed into the skin speeding up the healing process. Furthermore the scented oils add to the relaxation by their aroma that encompasses all human senses.
Message therapy is a very effective measure to release tension, anxiety and the stiffness of the muscles. In today’s hectic times, people tend to over work their muscles, which results in the accumulation of harmful acids like lactic acid and causes the muscles to sore. Message therapy helps to overcome such problems.
Another human system benefiting from the muscle therapy is the lymphatic system. The are various lymph nodes in out body that get stimulated by message which in turns helps the circulatory and immune system. Moreover massage therapy is conducive to the overall health of a patient as it brings fresh oxygen to the tissues of the human body ,which bolsters a healthy human body.
Massage therapy is helpful because it extends its benefits to psychological aspects too. The fact is that there is no replacement or equivalent of a human touch, it offers a sense of caring that cannot be done in any other manifestation.
Although a single, one time experience of a massage also holds tremendous benefits for the patient or the person getting the massage, however it can be safely said that the benefits are more apparent and profound if one gets the massage consistently and regularly. In today’s fast paced and hectic world, it would not be wrong to say that one should get a massage every day of one’s life as this seems the most plausible antidote to cope up with the pressures of today’s life. Having said that, one cannot ignore the expenses attached with getting a massage and it is nothing less than a luxury for the common man. However, one should not feel too bad as now there is a wide variety of products that act as massage stimulants and can be easily bought in shopping stores etc. For example, one of the popular products known as the Theracane, allows one to massage one’s back in slow, circular motions which relaxes the back muscles and relieves pain and tension. There are many other products available in the market as well serving the same purposes and many more. It is recommended though that one should consult a professional therapist or chiropractors before indulging in self-massage through these products.
