Does Diet Affect Acne? 2 Studies Say Yes
It is a commonly-held notion that the only ways to get rid of acne are to use creams, gels and ointments, or by letting your dermatologist get you on a serious tretinoin or isotretinoin such as Retin-A or Accutane.
But two studies seem to show that we may want to start looking other places for the answer. The results of both studies? Acne may be caused by too much sugar in the diet.
A study conducted by Neil Mann, a PhD at the School of Applied Sciences at RMIT University in Melbourne, Australia and his colleagues concluded that:
"The improvement in acne and insulin sensitivity after a low-glycemic-load diet suggests that nutrition-related lifestyle factors may play a role in the pathogenesis of acne. However, further studies are needed to isolate the independent effects of weight loss and dietary intervention and to further elucidate the underlying pathophysiologic mechanisms."
To restate, too many sugars cause lessened insular sensitivity, which results in poorer hormonal balance, which can lead to worsened acne. Although this study only focused on males aged 15-25 and the effects of only sugar intake, it is rather conclusive that eating fewer sugars will positively affect acne, especially if you fall into this age group.
A second study, headed by Loren Cordain of Utah University, involved looking at a large group of Kitavan islanders (1200), 300 of whom were in the prime acne age-range of 15-25 yet had not a trace of acne. The study shows how their diet, mainly fish, fruit and other unprocessed foods such as tubers, may be perfect for avoiding the refined sugars that lead to acne. It seems, indeed, that the best natural remedies for acne may come straight from nature in the form of unprocessed foods and natural sweets.
Of course, mileage will vary with the individual, and there are likely other factors at play. However, cutting back on sugars is not only likely to improve your acne. It has been shown that refined sugar intake can lead to raised insulin levels and thus a depressed immune system, which in turn will result in increased chance of contracting diseases. For these reasons, it seems very conclusive that cutting out, or at least drastically cutting back on, refined sugars will have a positive effect on your acne while increasing your overall health at the same time.

Back Acne - How You Can Cure It With Diet
The secretion of too much oil into the skin causes back acne. This mixes with dead skin cells to clog the pores and create an ideal environment for the formation of acne. It is natural for the body to secrete oil to the skin to protect it and keep it healthy. A healthy body controls the amount of oil it produces. It is when there is too much oil the problems start. As some foods trigger the production of excess oil it makes sense to try to avoid them.
An Unhealthy Diet
Eating the wrong foods will raise the blood sugar level in your body. Your body then creates insulin and other hormones to combat these higher levels of sugar. The imbalance of hormones helps create the excess oil. Foods that raise the blood sugar level are the over-refined carbohydrates, which are common in most diets. For example, white flour has been refined to the point where it has very few nutrients left in it. In fact, bread manufacturers have to add vitamins to sell their product. In spite of this, most people eat white bread.
White sugar is another example. This has no nutritional value at all, but it is found in many of the food products we buy. A recent analysis of a popular breakfast cereal found a 30% sugar content. Drinks with high sugar content are sold by the millions. Of course, not everyone who consumes them breaks out in acne, but many do.
Milk and milk products can be a problem for back acne sufferers. Hormonal imbalance in your body produces excess oil and milk is full of hormones.
A Healthy Diet
There is plenty of evidence, both scientific and anecdotal, that shows a change in diet can reduce and cure back acne breakouts in some people. Whole grain breads can replace white bread; raw sugar can replace white sugar. You can change your diet to include more fruit, vegetables and salads. You may find it hard to change your eating habits suddenly. Just do what you can. If you start thinking about it, and you are sufficiently motivated, you will reach a stage when most of the food you eat will be nutritious and healthy. You will be rewarded with fewer acne outbreaks and with you back becoming clearer.
The Right Diet for You
While cutting down on refined carbohydrates and milk products and changing to a healthier diet will help your acne, there may be other foods that trigger breakouts in your body. You could check this over the next few weeks and look for any negative reactions from certain foods. You may have already discovered this and are avoiding some foods.
When to Expect Results?
An Australian university conducted a 12-week study which showed good results. There were 50 young men in the study: 25 stayed on their normal highly refined carbohydrate, high GI diet and 25 ate whole grains, fruit, vegetables, lean meats - a generally low GI diet. After 12 weeks, the 25 on the healthy diet reduced their acne by 50 percent. That seems to be a reasonable period of time to allow for results. You may see results even earlier than that.
If you make up your mind to change to a healthy diet and follow it through, you should see your back acne improve or even cured.
